Expo

As the first-ever Specialised Expo in the Western Balkans, Expo 2027 in Belgrade will allow Serbia to draw global attention to this region of Southeast Europe. Expo 2027 Belgrade will make both the host country and the broader region more visible on the world map, bringing benefits to neighbouring countries and their economies.

Expo 2027 Belgrade is an opportunity for the world to see the real potential of the region. It will demonstrate that Serbia is not only keeping pace with the latest global trends in infrastructure, tourism, science, technology, artificial intelligence etc., but also that it has the capacity to lead in such domains.

The Expo site is set to be an innovative and modern exhibition complex that, for three months in 2027, will welcome more than 4 million visitors and over 130 participating countries. In addition to engaging in the main activities of the Expo, international participants will also organise cultural programmes and events, which will be available to tens of thousands of people every day. Over 8,000 events are anticipated throughout the 93-day programme, encompassing a wide range of activities.

In these globally challenging times, Serbia’s hope is that Expo 2027 Belgrade will mark a new chapter in history marked by harmony, friendship, and celebration.

Theme

Play for Humanity – Sport and Music for All

The theme, "Play for humanity – Sport and Music for All", was designed with the purpose of exploring the ways in which humanity can use the power of play for building resilience of individuals and communities in a world full of insecurities.
Play is viewed as a superpower for the future, enabling creativity, innovation, and growth. The proposed theme has been further developed into sub-themes to allow international participants to present themselves in the best possible way with ideas and solutions that address the central question:

  • How to prepare the human body, mind, and logic for a technology-driven world facing uncertainty, and make humans more resilient for the coming decades?

The sub-themes are Power of Play (Play as a path to healing and sustainability), Play for Progress (Play as a driver of innovation and imagination), and Play Together (Play as a tool for connection, peace, and inclusion).

The theme will allow Expo 2027 Belgrade to be the largest celebration of global recovery shaped by the power of play embellished with music and sport.

Site

The Expo complex is part of a larger Urban Masterplan development, including a new National Stadium with a 52,000-person capacity, an Aquatic centre and the Expo Village. All these elements are unified with a central urban landscaped promenade.

The Expo complex design concept is based around providing an "Urban Oasis" which would become the key urban destination for tourists, Expo visitors and city dwellers, reinforcing its sustainability goals.

The Expo complex consists of the three areas: International Pavilions, the Thematic Zone, and the Corporate & Best Practice Area. These three areas are interconnected, not only by streets and alleyways, but also with evenly distributed content so the overall visitor experience is seamless.

A free-flowing, lushly landscaped public space will be created for an abundance of experiences, aligned with the proposed Expo theme.

About Belgrade

Situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, Belgrade is one of Europe’s oldest and most distinctive continuously inhabited cities—a crossroads of civilisations for over 5,000 years.

Today, Belgrade serves as the cultural and economic heart of Southeast Europe, a thriving hub of knowledge, innovation, and creativity. With a dynamic economy and vibrant urban energy, it is increasingly recognised as a destination of global significance.

The city enchants visitors with its historic charm, diverse cuisine, renowned nightlife, and a calendar packed with international cultural events. Belgrade is also an important stop on the European Rivers Route—one of Europe’s most popular long-distance cycling trails—and the Sultans Trail, a hiking and cycling path that stretches from Vienna to Istanbul.

Mascots

The two mascots of Expo 2027 Belgrade – Rastko and Milica – embody the Expo theme “Play for Humanity – Sport and Music for all”, and the spirit of the host country, Serbia.

The names of the mascots carry a deep connection to Serbian culture: Rastko embodies growth, progress and innovation, while Milica represents warmth, kindness and harmony. Their names were chosen through public voting, with around 100,000 citizens casting their votes.

Together, as the superheroes of play, Rastko and Milica reflect a blend of energy and hospitality that defines Expo 2027 Belgrade. Inspired by contemporary Serbian culture, the mascots reflect Belgrade’s dynamism and Serbia’s openness to the world, all while bearing the colours of the Expo.
